A business model that worked yesterday may no longer find the same response when customer and market needs change. That is why I value regularly reassessing those needs. New business models often emerge from presenting existing value in a different form. Not every option requires a new product.

Reading Changing Needs

Looking at our organization from the outside can help us see beyond familiar ways of presenting what we do. What customers need, and how that need is changing, point to options worth exploring.

Exploring Possibilities Together

When strategy, design, and technology come together at the same table, different disciplines can refine one another's questions. During exploration, the purpose is to generate options that can be tested. Small experiments help us learn about these options before making a major decision.

To begin, changing needs and the signals behind them can be collected on a single page. Then choose three different ways of presenting the value and write one hypothesis for each. Testing the least expensive experiment within a month can be a concrete step toward bringing the result into a decision.
