The first thing a leader needs to clarify on the AI agenda is which organizational priority it will serve. Which business outcome will change, and how will success be measured? The choice of tools follows from these answers.
Within this framework, the strategic objective, expected business value, and human principles to be upheld can be defined together. Assessing the organization's readiness also requires looking at the maturity of its capabilities, data, processes, culture, and governance together.
The team's domain knowledge, problem-solving, data literacy, judgment, creativity, and capacity to adapt to change are part of this assessment. I do not assume that training can close every gap. Some needs call for job redesign, peer learning, coaching, collaboration across teams, or external expertise.
Governance also needs attention from the outset. It should be clear which data may be used, which outputs require verification, which decisions remain with people, and who is responsible when errors occur. Reducing a human-in-the-loop approach to a final approval checkbox limits the contribution of human judgment. Deciding where that judgment enters the process is part of the design.
When deciding whether to scale applications, an impressive demo is not enough evidence. Strategic value, adoption, output quality, risk, and capability development need to be tracked together. Applications that show results can be incorporated into shared standards and the organization's learning practices. Trials that do not work can be examined openly and redesigned. Their results can then inform later decisions too.
Ask yourself
- Which strategic priority does our AI agenda serve?
- Which capabilities is my team gaining and losing as it works with AI?
- In which decisions do we explicitly preserve human responsibility?
