Family businesses have a substantial foundation in the industry knowledge accumulated across generations, deep relationships with customers and employees, a long-term perspective, and quick decision-making. Making this experience visible can also provide a basis for transformation in the AI era.
When considering AI-Native transformation, I believe we need to go beyond transferring this legacy into digital form. What value the company wants to create in the future, which capabilities will distinguish it, and how people and AI will divide the work need to be considered together. When the older generation's judgment and the younger generation's capacity for exploration meet around a shared goal for the future, technology can help the generations work together.
I recommend starting with the family and management forming a shared view of the company's future and defining AI's role in it. Choosing a priority among growth, internationalization, customer intimacy, operational resilience, and new business models gives the transformation a clearer direction. It should also be clear which decisions the family, management, and professional staff have a say in.
Mapping the capabilities of the generations, professional managers, and employees together shows which skills are available for this goal and which are missing. Strategic use cases can then be introduced in stages, along with criteria for governance, learning, and investment.
Data privacy, reputation, human approval, and investment discipline should be part of this plan. Clear governance establishes who is responsible for these issues and the boundaries within which they can act. This allows a family business to draw on its past experience while reconsidering past methods.
Ask yourself
- Which accumulated knowledge and experience in our family and company could become new value in the future?
- How can we bring the generations' strengths together around the same transformation goal?
- Which capabilities do we want to be known for five years from now?
